Most Intriguing Position Battles in Camp

Three straight offseasons, the Dolphins and their ownership have sought the huge splash. And three straight years, they did just that. Need the best wide receiver on the market? Signed Mike Wallace. Need the best left tackle on the market? Signed Brandon Albert. Don't really need the best defensive tackle on the market but want to add him anyways because you have ridiculous amounts of cash to spend? Signed Ndamukong Suh.

2016 brought a different approach. Spend less, target under the radar veterans, and hope this approach leads to more wins on the field. Other than Mario Williams, who is coming off a terrible season in Buffalo, names like Isa Abdul-Quddus, Jason Jones, Andre Branch, Chris Jones, and Jermon Bushrod won't excite a fan base. All five however, and late addition Arian Foster, should play significant roles for the Dolphins this season. Let's take a look at some of the more intriguing position battles to be resolved during training camp and the preseason.

Defensive Line: So much depth, question marks, and intrigue among this group.

Mario Williams will start. Ndamukong Suh will start. Moving on.

To me, Cam Wake is still a force to be reckoned with coming off the edge, and all reports have him coming to camp in tremendous shape after a torn achilles ended his 2015 season. Wake had 7 sacks and 4 forced fumbles in just 7 games last season. Look for him to be the specialist off the edge. I expect Andre Branch to get a ton of opportunities on first and second down, same with Jason Jones, who has started 31 of 32 games for the Lions the past two seasons, and can flex inside if needed on pure pass rush downs.
The guy I'm most intrigued with is Chris Jones. A former starter for the Patriots, Jones missed 2015 due to injury but is healthy and a candidate to overtake solid-but-unspectacular Earl Mitchell. Jordan Phillips showed flashes in his rookie year, and will certainly rotate in with the 1s and 2s in training camp reps, but I can see a scenario in which Jones forces Mitchell off the starting unit, and maybe off the roster.

Don't forget Terrence Fede, Chris McCain, and Dion Jordan. All 3 will battle for maybe just one spot to make the 53 man roster, and in Jordan's case, maybe as a linebacker instead of at crowded DE.

Cornerback: Byron Maxwell will start. He's not a #1 shutdown corner, but it is what it is. Moving on.

This unit took a big hit entering training camp as rookie second round pick Xavien Howard was placed on the PUP list with a knee injury. I didn't expect him to start on the outside right away, but he would certainly have been given every opportunity to impress over a group of no name guys who form what appears to be the worst position group on the roster.

Tony Lippett will be the front runner to start opposite Maxwell. Bobby McCain was activated off the PUP list today. He is the front runner to start in the slot.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is a highly intriguing piece to this puzzle. A highly touted prospect coming out of Oregon, a torn ACL derailed his draft position, and he has yet to play a down in the pros. He will get a long look in camp and preseason. The talent is there, can he run and cover like he did in college?

Newly signed Brandon Harris and Reshaan Melvin, who have NFL experience, will battle to make the team, along with rookie 6th round pick Jordan Lucas, who seems like a practice squad candidate.

Offensive Line: Mike Pouncey, Brandon Albert, and Ja'wuan James will start. They're good. Moving on.

Laremy Tunsil should start week 1. That is the expectation of a first round pick, at a position of need, with weak incumbents to beat. He has not yet been running with the 1s in camp, but it's early, and he should be the starting LG on opening day. If he's not, something went very wrong.

Billy Turner is the front runner to start at RG. He will be pushed by newcomer and converted tackle Jermon Bushrod. Bushrod has been a solid veteran in this league, who could stabilize the line on the right side if he wins the job. I see this as a toss up more so due to Bushrod's injury problems and learning a new position. Billy Turner shouldn't be a starter on a good NFL OL.

Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglas, and FA veteran Kraig Urbik should all get enough work to determine whether they belong on the 53 man roster. I say Urbik sticks as the last lineman in if they only carry 7 active.

Safety: One of the few true one on one battles will be who starts at safety opposite star Reshad Jones. Isa Abdul Quddus got a nice contract from the Dolphins, and will battle Michael Thomas. Advantage IAQ for now, but Thomas has made some plays for the Fins the past couple of seasons.

Note: I did not include running back because I expect a true timeshare to emerge out of Arian Foster and Jay Ajayi. Kenyan Drake will get spot duties.

The Success of the 2016 Season Hinges on the Defense

As we are a couple days into training camp and the team is getting back in the swing of things I have taken a step back to look at this Dolphins roster as it is configured today. And to me I think the issues on defense for this team are much bigger than any of us thought back in March and April during free agency and the draft.

Let's start with the defensive line for the Fins. To me this is the strongest unit on the defensive side of the ball for Miami as we sit today but this unit is a total boom or bust. If Mario Williams shows last year his lack of production was because he didn't fit in Rex Ryan's scheme and can resort to his typical old form, that's a boom. If Cam Wake can come back healthy, that is a boom. If Ndamukong Suh shows that his year last year was hampered by a poor defensive system he didn't fit in, that's a boom. But lets be honest, Wake might not come back healthy, Mario Williams might have quit on the Bills last year and lost his competitive spirit as a player, and maybe Suh can't find the success in Miami that he had in Detroit. Then this unit is a total Bust.  To me its a 60/40 split as of today. I think there is a 60% chance this unit is a boom in the 2016 season and the defensive line does play well, but it would not shock me if this unit does fail. A name to keep an eye on here this year; Chris Jones. I am very high on Jones and I wouldn't be shocked if at some point this season Jones is starting at DT next to Suh and to see Jones pass both Earl Mitchell and Jordan Phillips on the depth chart.

Neville Hewitt
The linebackers to me is a unit that while they are far from good, they are a bit improved over last season if they can stay healthy. The biggest issue with this group is health and being able to stay on the field. Koa Misi who every year seems like he is on the injury report every week for every game must stay on the field. When healthy Misi is a solid and above average outside linebacker. Kiko Alonso had a fantastic rookie season but is coming off some major injuries and hasn't had much NFL success in a few years. Dion Jordan, yeah we all know the story there. Jelani Jenkins is a nice role player but not someone who is very reliable nor is a big-time talent in the NFL picture. While this unit lacks quality playmakers and guys who are "impact players" I do think this unit can hold its own if the defensive line plays well and is that "boom" I spoke about above. If the defensive line is solid, this unit will look better than they are. If the defensive line is a "bust" then this linebacker unit will get exposed and look poor. Player to watch out of the linebackers; Neville Hewitt. I think Hewitt may be the best linebacker on the roster (yes better than Kiko and Koa) when all is said and done. I wouldn't be shocked if Hewitt is starting Week 1 over Jenkins either. If Hewitt progresses like he can his ceiling is higher than any linebacker on this roster. If Hewitt improves and does get better, if Kiko  and Koa stay healthy, if Jordan actually isn't suspended and plays, this linebacker group has potential. Lot's of "If's" a real lot of "If's" actually but the potential is there at linebacker for this unit to play well.

Tony Lippett
On to the secondary, and well there is no nice way to say this but this unit is a dumpster fire. Let me make one thing clear; the safety position is fine. Reshad Jones is probably the best safety in the NFL today and I think Isa Abdul-Quddus is a very good player. With Michael Thomas backing them up, the safety position is fine in my book.  The corners, that's another story. Byron Maxwell won't kill you on the field. I think he got too much of a bad rap last season in Philly and he is returning to a "defensive scheme" that fits his style of play better. After that though, yikes its scary. Second round pick Xavier Howard will miss most if not all of training camp. Pretty much like Devante Parker did last year and as we saw with Parker a rookie missing camp is a death nail. I wouldn't look for Howard to play or produce much early this season. I wouldn't expect to see anything out of him until late October or November. Tony Lippett is a converted WR who is learning the position of CB. I mean he is a total project and it looks like he is going to be starting come Week 1. I have little faith with him on the field in games that matter. Bobby McCain is an undersized CB who is ok in the nickel. Key word there being "ok" as he didn't show much last year when he played. I'm not sure Lippet or McCain would make most other NFL teams and Miami is going to have them be starting playing significant snaps? Very scary! And regarding cornerback depth there is none. Behind the names I have mentioned are a  Who's Who of WHO?!  Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Chimdi Chekwa, Rashaan Melvin, Jordan Lucas are back-ups to this unit and that is an ugly picture. And I know fans are wondering if the team will go out and sign a vet who is on the market still. The issue with that is, who is on the market and there is a reason those guys are on the market. Chris Culliver is coming off some major injuries and Leon Hall was banged up last year and is on the wrong side of 30. Will the Dolphins make a move for one of those two players in the coming days/weeks; maybe but I wouldn't hold my breath! I can't even give you a guy to watch on this unit really as every CB not named Maxwell is a total unknown and is unproven. My advice for Dolphins fans when it comes to the CB position....pray!

This defense is clearly a work in progress and there is a lot of work to be done. Best case scenario is the Front 7 is stout and plays solid and helps the secondary look better than it maybe is. Worst scenario is the Front 7 is past their prime and the secondary gets exposed badly. It will be interesting to follow and see how it plays out.

Jason Taylor will be in the Radio Booth for Dolphins Preseason Games

Miami, FL – The Miami Dolphins today announced former Dolphins Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor has joined the preseason radio broadcast team on WQAM. Taylor will serve as an analyst alongside Joe Rose with Jimmy Cefalo handling the play-by-play duties. The news was announced on “The Audible,” the team’s new 30-minute produced show live streamed on, the Dolphins app, Facebook Live and Periscope that features unique perspectives on the team with long-form conversations, interviews and social media interaction where fans will have the ability to ask questions and take part in the discussion.
Taylor served as an analyst on ESPN throughout the 2012 season, appearing on NFL Live, SportsCenter, NFL32 and Sunday and Monday NFL Countdown. In 2014, he served as a regular on Pro Football Talk, the NBC Sports Network show hosted by Mike Florio. In 2015, he was an analyst on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s weekly NFL show. Taylor made his broadcast booth debut as a game analyst on Oct. 31, 2015, covering the University of Georgia-University of Florida game for Westwood One Sports.
Taylor played 15 seasons in the NFL, including 13 years with the Dolphins (1997-2007, 2009 and 2011). He ranks sixth all-time in NFL history for most career sacks with 139.5 and is the all-time NFL leader in fumble return touchdowns with six. He won numerous awards throughout his career, including the 2006 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award and the 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, the only league honor that recognizes both on-field achievements and off-the-field contributions. Taylor also was a six-time Pro Bowl selection (2000, 2002, 2004–2007), a four-time first or second team All-Pro (2000–2002, 2006), a two-time NFL Alumni Association Defensive Lineman of the Year (2005, 2006) and the NFL Alumni Association Pass Rusher of the Year (2000).
All Dolphins games can be heard on 560 WQAM and KISS 99.9, the flagship stations of the Miami Dolphins Radio Network, and throughout South and Central Florida on the more than 12 stations that make up The Miami Dolphins Radio Network.
In addition to the game broadcasts, the stations will feature expanded pre, halftime and postgame shows. Dolphins fans who tune into Miami's Sportsradio 560 WQAM will have the opportunity to listen to live broadcasts of Head Coach Adam Gase’s day-after game press conferences and “Dolphins Friday,” a day of Dolphins’ centric-content on the station featuring interviews with players, coaches and team executives.

Reinstated: The Dion Jordan Edtition

No more questions, Dion Jordan has been officially reinstated on a conditional basis on the first day of training camp.  He is allowed to participate in all practices and pre-season games according to the league letter.  However, he is required to meet with specialist (mental, rehab center) throughout his time back in the league.  Before the regular season begins, he will have another meeting with Roger Goodell to get full re-instatement if everything is going to protocol.

It is interesting on many fronts but here is the one you want to keep in mind as we go forward:

The Miami Dolphins are on the hook for $1.7M coming Monday at 12:00AM.  Dion Jordan was drafted by a previous regime, and Gase and co have NO clue what they are getting.  Dion has ruffled many feathers during his tumulus tenor here in Miami.  So what are the Dolphins options?

1)  Dion Jordan is on the roster Monday morning and he becomes almost a lock to make the roster, based on the fact he is getting a bonus at that time.

2)  The Dolphins can cut him without major ramifications due to him violating policy.

3)  The Dolphins can trade him.  But does he have any real value?  A 7th rounder pick or conditional 7th rounder may get it done, but I doubt it will be a 2017 pick.

This is an amazing time!  Camp has started, the team is getting ready for their first game against the Giants on August 12th.  The Dion Jordan drama has really just begun, what will the Dolphins do?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Tuesday Morning AM Tidbits

We are DAYS away from training camp and news is coming fast and furious.  Here are some Dolphins tidbits:

- Dion Jordan will  reportedly NOT be owed his roster bonus if he is reinstated ($1.69M).  Since he violated the NFL Disciplinary policy, the Dolphins have re-couped that money.  If Dion is reinstated, looks like he will be on house money and could provide more fire for him to get that money back.  There is also still no updated status regarding Dion's reinstatement.

- Xavien Howard, our 2nd round draft pick from Baylor, has been put on the PUP list.  He had minor off-season surgery and has not fully recovered  yet.  This gives the lead to Tony Lippett, who according to multiple sources, has the eye of Vance Joseph as he has improved SIGNIFICANTLY from his rookie season.  Keep an eye on that battle once camp begins.

- Adam Gase believes Bobby McCain will continue to focus on being the starting slot corner leading into camp.  It is his job to lose.

- Adam Gase will also limit the snaps of players coming off injury as well as some of the older players on the team.  he wants everyone healthy coming into the regular season.

If you haven't checked out some of the videos from some of the beat writers, have a look at the new facility entrance.  It looks fantastic!

Check back to for further updates when they become available.  Don't forget to listen to Episode 12 of the podcast!

RB Arian Foster to workout for Dolphins and Lions this Week

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that Free Agent RB Arian Foster will work out for the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions this week.  With Foster it will come down to money so I expect the team that offers the most money is where he will land. Miami does have some former Texans coaches (ie Vance Joseph) on their staff now as well as Mario Williams who played with Foster in the past as well so there are some ties there to Miami with Foster.

If I am the Dolphins front office and Foster is healthy they have to make the move to sign him. You don't think twice about this and you make this move. Is Foster and every down #1 RB anymore? NO! Clearly he isn't and he can't hold up to that type of pounding. But guess what, Jay Ajayi isn't a #1 RB either. Ajayi's knee is bone on bone, we all knew that when we drafted him, and then he spent most of last year injured with various injuries.

Other Dolphins running backs on the roster like Kenyan Drake also had a spotty injury history while in college and he is already dinged up and training camp hasn't even started yet. Miami needs a proven vet back on this team. Again, this isn't the Foster of old. He isn't going for 1500 yards and 13 TD's. But he is a guy who can pick up a blitz in the backfield (something Ajayi and Williams struggle with and with Drake as a rookie is probably not going to do well with) and he is a guy who can take the load off of Jay Ajayi and not have too much pressure on him.

If healthy, make that signing Miami!

Why Miko Grimes Is A Racist and Clearly She Doesn't Even Know It

Yes this is going to be an article on Miko Grimes and her Anti-Semitic rant so if you are sick of hearing about Miko feel free to skip this article. Close out your internet browser and don't read it. No need to tell me to move on, get over it, or that you don't care about Miko anymore. Up until about 24 hours ago I had and hadn't talked about her at all in months, but she went on a racist rant so now I am writing this. And I fully admit Miko and myself have a long history. She cursed me out and attacked me on twitter. Then after she blocked me she had her mother-in law (Brent's mom) Deborah Hall then attack me and curse me out on twitter. To say the whole family is crazy is the understatement of the century. With that said, let's break down the past 24 hours of the latest Miko drama.

Where to start, well let's start by stating the obvious. Many long-time Dolphins fans and those especially who follow the team daily on twitter have known that Miko Grimes is not a nice or good human being. She has come out against the police and been arrested in the past. She has used public airways to attack people who disagree with her and she threatened to kill a South Florida sports journalist because his football views and opinions didn't agree with hers. This is the type of low-life garbage we have been subjected to for the past few years.

Sunday night though a new twist, Miko showed the world she is a racist. Her Anti-Semitic tweet crossed a line she isn't going to be able to talk her way out of. She can yell and throw a temper tantrum but her true colors came out, and those colors are those of a bigot.

It would be easy to sit here and say Miko Grimes is dumb (she is) but it goes far beyond that. It's not that she is uneducated, ignorant, and dumb; above all else she is dense. She just doesn't get it. She doesn't get why what she said was racist. Being dumb can be fixed; you can smarten a person up over time. But dense, you can't fix dense. Either a person has a shred of common sense to take a step back, re-evaluate the situation and learn from it or they don't. Clearly Miko  is proving she isn't changing any time soon.

Let's break down what Miko said; she knocked Dolphins owner Stephen Ross for hiring his "jew buddies" and came out and basically said that Ross only hires Jewish people because he himself is Jewish. Last time I looked Jeff Ireland, Adam Gase, Chris Grier, Joe Philbin, Tony Sparano, Dennis Hickey...all non-Jews. Dawn Aponte, Mike Dee, and Matt Higgins...3 more non-Jews. Where are all of these Jews that Miko is talking about? Mike Tannenbaum, ok there is 1. Tom Garfinkel, ok 2. Wow, 2 hires in the close to ten years Ross has owned this team means he only hires his "jew buddies?" Not only is Miko a racist she is bad at math.

To double down on her stupidity then Miko gave an interview with ESPN journalist Jenna Laine and if you ever needed proof Miko is clueless her explanation of her comments were in and of itself racist and proved she is racist. Miko said...."When I wrote 'jew buddies' I was speaking about how a lot of communities (Jewish, Christian, gay, sometimes fraternities and sororities) will hire their 'own people' for jobs before others. That's a fact! Why people find facts offensive is strange to me. And now im a racist? Lmao! How?"  It's a fact? A fact to who? Maybe it's a fact in the mind of a racist, but it is far from a fact. What evidence does Miko have that Jews hire Jews first, Christians hire Christians first, Gays hire Gays first? That is only a fact if you are a racist and if you believe it!

Miko thinking she has cleared up her point and shown the world that she is as anything but a racist only went on to prove he is 100% a racist. She is the female version of Archie Bunker. Remember the TV show from the 70's All in the Family; sure you do it's legendary. Two types of people watched that show and laughed at it. When Archie Bunker said something off color and racist, you either laughed because he was a moron and you are laughing at him for being a racist moron. Then there is a segment of society who laughed at his off color/racist comments because they agreed with him. If you were laughing with Archie Bunker, newsflash you are a racist. If you believe what Miko Grimes is saying these past 24 hours, this just in, you are a racist too!

Now let's get to what should happen. Miko isn't employed by an NFL team, she is just a family member of an NFL player. The team can't suspend or fine Miko Grimes, but you know what the NFL can punish her. The NFL makes billions upon billions of dollars and the last thing the NFL needs is a known bigot and racist putting a tarnish on their league.  With Miko's history, with Miko being arrested at a game last year, with Miko now spewing racist rants online towards an NFL owner, the NFL would be well within it's rights to ban, yes ban, Miko Grimes from all NFL stadiums and NFL sanctioned functions.  I know Miko believes the world revolves around her, but guess what it doesn't. The NFL doesn't need this headache and it isn't the first headache Miko has given the NFL. The NFL which fines players for wearing socks the wrong way, different color shoes on game days, prevents fans from making officially licensed jersey's with curse words on the back of them, the NFL which has a rule for everything and goes above and beyond to fine and punish players for even the smallest infractions would be well within their right to ban Miko Grimes for life from any and all stadiums and events.

And to the Tampa Bay Buccaners; have some guts! Punish Brent Grimes for his wife's outburst. Say what you want about Stephen Ross but he eventually had enough and cut Brent over his wife's actions. It took him a while to get there but he had the guts to do it.  Tampa now has to have some guts and say this language is unacceptable. Brent, you and your family, don't represent this franchise the way it should be represented. You are bringing conduct detrimental to the team and Tampa Bay needs to fine or give a short suspension to Brent Grimes. Tampa Bay needs to show some guts and do something here.

Last but not least, the media types in Miami who are friends with Miko Grimes need to step up and come out against her. We all know who I am talking about so I won't name this person but the days of saying, "It's Miko being Miko" and telling us to move on and get over it. Those days are over. If you associate and defend a known racist, that stink rubs off on you and you too my friend are a racist as well. There is one well known media type who has defends Miko no matter what she does and up until now those things might have been over the top, silly, stupid so you kind of just brush it off and not take it seriously. This latest Miko outburst is more than that, it crossed a line and is serious. Miko crossed a line and went full blown racist. To this media person who we all know I am talking about but I won't name,; you have run to your twitter account and radio shows to defend her in the past. Don't get quiet and go run and hide now. Step up and come out against her and her comments or else you get painted with the same racist brush she is getting painted with. Can't go quiet now!

And to end I want to clear up a story I reported on back in early April. In early April I reported that the Esquire Network were in talks with Miko Grimes for a reality show around her. Talks were ongoing but nothing had been decided. I reached out to my sources at the Esquire Network earlier today and was told that the Esquire Network has ditched any and all ideas involving Miko Grimes and they won't be in business with her moving forward in any way as of this morning. Her Anti-Semitic rant killed all talks moving forward.

The Dolphins and Dolphins fans have moved on from Miko Grimes. Nobody was talking about her at all in many months. Miko was the one who threw this bomb at the Dolphins ownership, quarterback, and fans. Miko ran her mouth and put her racist Anti-Semitic foot in it. This isn't a time where people can get on their high horse and say; "move on from Miko why bother talking about her." What Miko did isn't about a football opinion or if she is right or wrong about the game of football. Miko took this beyond football and accused a man of being racist when there is nothing to show he is a racist at all. And that my friends is bigger than any "football opinion." Miko had her Jimmy The Greek and Hulk Hogan moment of spewing hate and being a racist and it's sad. Podcast for July 11th
